If you’re looking for old-time rock and roll music, incredible acting and singing, and amazing sets and costumes that transport you back to the 1950’s, then Branson’s Welk Resort Theater has just the show for you! Based on the Tony award-winning musical of the same name, Branson’s Million Dollar Quartet is now playing at the Welk Theater for another season!
The inspiration for the original Million Dollar Quartet musical came from one magical night in rock and roll history. On December 4, 1956, music producer and owner of Sun Records, Sam Phillips, gathered some of rock and roll’s most famous artists for an unforgettable jam session. Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and then-newcomer Jerry Lee Lewis came together to play some of their most famous songs in what would eventually be considered a pivotal point in rock and roll history.
The original version of Million Dollar Quartet was written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott. The show dramatized the now-famous Million Dollar Quartet recording session, seamlessly weaving the familiar songs from the jam session through a compelling story. The musical opened on Broadway in 2010 and on London’s West End in 2011. The musical has played at venues all over the US and recently had a revival at the famous Paper Mill Playhouse. The show features familiar songs like “Blue Suede Shoes” by Carl Perkins, “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash, “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis, and “Hound Dog” by Elvis Presley. The performers portraying these legends of rock and roll music are so convincing, you’ll almost forget you’re watching a stage musical!
